LEVEL 2
CUSTOMER SERVICE PRACTITIONER (v1.1)
The Customer Service PractitionerApprenticeship Assessment Explained
Customer service practitioners work across sectors and organisation types, providing support through face-to-face, telephone, written and digital interactions. They may be the first point of contact for customers, delivering service from the workplace or within the customer’s own locality.
The core purpose of a customer service practitioner is to provide high-quality service that meets customer needs and reflects their organisation’s standards and values.
In practice, their work may include handling enquiries, processing orders and payments, offering advice, supporting sales, resolving problems and providing aftercare. They use their knowledge of products and services to explain options clearly, manage expectations and help customers reach an appropriate outcome.
Customer service practitioners adapt their communication to different people and situations, building rapport and treating customers as individuals. They take responsibility for their work, remain calm when dealing with challenging situations and work with colleagues to deliver a consistent customer experience.
The role also involves keeping service knowledge up to date, responding to feedback and sharing learning to support improvements in customer service.
Timeline
The apprenticeship typically includes a 12-month training period. This is followed by the assessment period, during which the apprentice completes their showcase, practical observation and professional discussion.
For additional information about this apprenticeship assessment, read the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship Assessment Plan.

Assessment methods
01
Apprentice showcase
The apprentice selects and presents evidence demonstrating their development and competence across the areas of the standard assessed through the showcase.
Evidence is drawn from their work during the apprenticeship and may include customer feedback, recordings, manager statements, witness statements and performance reviews.
The showcase follows a brief set by the assessment organisation. Its format is agreed with the employer, apprentice and assessment organisation and may include a presentation, report, storyboard or journal.
The independent assessor directly assesses the showcase evidence and interviews the apprentice to explore their learning and experience in more detail.
02
Practical observation
An independent assessor observes the apprentice carrying out genuine customer service activities in their normal workplace.
The observation lasts a minimum of one hour and includes customer interaction. It must cover presentation, equality, interpersonal skills, communication and personal organisation.
Activities may include handling an enquiry, responding to a complaint or helping a customer obtain further information. Areas that cannot be demonstrated during the observation are explored through the professional discussion.
03
Professional discussion
A structured discussion with an independent assessor, held after the practical observation, lasting a maximum of one hour.
The apprentice explains how they apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours, reflects on their development and discusses examples of their work.
The discussion also allows the assessor to clarify evidence from the observation and explore how the apprentice would respond to situations that did not arise during it.
