LEVEL 4
SPORTS COACH (v1.3)
The Sports Coach Apprenticeship Assessment Explained
This occupation sits within the sport and physical activity sector across high-performance, community, and school environments.
High Performance Sport Coaches develop athletes in elite settings, including talent pathways, national and international programmes, and professional or podium-level sport.
Community Sport Coaches engage and motivate people of all ages and abilities through local authority, charity, and national governing body initiatives or clubs.
School Sport Coaches work alongside teachers to develop pupils’ psychomotor skills using a whole-child approach across school and childcare settings.
The core purpose of a sport coach is to apply advanced technical and tactical knowledge to design and deliver coaching programmes that develop skills, performance, and engagement. Coaches create high-quality learning and performance experiences that support competitive success, increase participation, enhance wellbeing, raise educational standards, and contribute to social and public health outcomes.
In practice, coaches collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders including coaching teams, managers, sponsors, governing bodies, and support staff. They apply a defined coaching philosophy aligned to organisational strategies and evaluate impact through performance and perception data, benchmarking against local, national, and international trends.
Coaches work both independently and collaboratively to deliver progressive, inclusive programmes tailored to individuals and groups, informed by robust profiling and whole-person development needs.
Specialist roles
High Performance Sports Coaches
Focus on accelerating athlete development and performance to enhance national and international success. They profile bio-psycho-social and sport-specific attributes to set goals and design structured programmes aligned to training and competition cycles. Stakeholders include athletes, parents, performance staff, sponsors, and governing bodies.
School Sport Coaches
Focus on developing pupils’ psychomotor skills and supporting physical education standards. They assess development across cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains, using national curriculum contexts to inform planning. Programmes align with school schedules and whole-child development. Stakeholders include pupils, school staff, parents, and wider support services.
Community Sport Coaches
Prioritise sustained participation and inclusion. They assess participants’ cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs, using this insight to plan seasonal programmes aligned to participation agendas such as those from Sport England. They apply a whole-person approach and design targeted interventions to improve accessibility. Stakeholders include participants, families, community staff, and local networks.
