LEVEL 2
COMMUNITY ACTIVATOR COACH (v1.3)

The Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Assessment Explained

This occupation is found across sport for social change charities, local authorities, sports clubs, leisure centres, after-school clubs, youth organisations, housing associations, and outdoor education settings.

The purpose is to improve health and wellbeing and create positive environments that support individuals and communities to grow through sport and physical activity. Community Activator Coaches achieve this by delivering fun, inclusive, and engaging activities that encourage sustained participation.

They work with managers and colleagues, and collaborate with external professionals such as youth workers, teachers, community organisations, and health workers.

The role involves delivering and adapting sessions, promoting participation, and engaging diverse communities, particularly young people, inactive individuals, and those from low-income or marginalised backgrounds. Coaches act as positive role models to build relationships and trust.

The role also requires ongoing personal and professional development and involves flexible working patterns, including evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

Timeline

The apprenticeship typically takes 18 months to complete, with assessment typically undertaken in the final 3 months.

Assessment methods

01

Observation with Questions

The observation with questioning lasts 1 hour, with up to 10% additional time at the assessor’s discretion to allow completion of tasks or responses. The observation may be split into sections on the same working day.

02

Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

The professional discussion lasts for 45 minutes. The independent assessor can increase the time of the professional discussion by up to 10%. This time is to allow the apprentice to respond to a question if necessary.

The independent assessor must ask at least 8 questions.

The portfolio of evidence underpins the professional discussion but is not directly assessed.

  • A portfolio of evidence for the professional discussion, compiled and mapped to the assessment criteria

  • Been confirmed as occupationally competent by their employer
